Almaty has a continental climate with four genuinely distinct seasons — proper winters, warm summers, and beautiful spring and autumn periods. The best time to visit depends on what you want to do, but most travellers find April through June and September through October offer the ideal combination of weather, mountain access, and manageable crowds.

Here’s a month-by-month breakdown of what to expect.

Spring: March to May

March — Early Spring, Variable

March is transitional — some days feel like late winter, others hint at spring. Average highs reach 8°C by end of the month, but cold snaps and snow are still possible, especially at elevation. The city begins to come alive after winter: outdoor café terraces start to open, Panfilov Park fills up on warm days.

Mountain conditions: Trails at lower elevations are accessible in good conditions, but higher routes remain snowy. Big Almaty Lake may still be partially frozen. Check trail conditions before planning hikes.

Nauryz (around March 21): Kazakhstan’s most important national holiday — the spring equinox celebration. Almaty hosts outdoor festivals, yurt displays, traditional food stalls, and performances across the city. A genuinely special time to be in Almaty if you can time your visit.

April — Best Early Shoulder Season

April is excellent. Temperatures are comfortable (averaging 16°C highs), the mountains are starting to open, and the city isn’t yet crowded. Spring flowers are blooming in the foothills and parks. Air quality is good — the temperature inversions that trap smog in winter have lifted.

Mountain conditions: Lower hiking trails in Ile-Alatau National Park are fully accessible. The road to Big Almaty Lake typically opens in late April. Shymbulak ski resort may still have some skiing in early April.

Best for: Hiking, city exploration, cultural visits. Ideal for travellers who want the mountains without summer heat.

May — Peak Spring

May is one of the best months to visit Almaty. Average highs of 22°C with long days, clear skies, and the entire mountain range accessible. The Green Bazaar fills with fresh produce; outdoor dining is at its best; the Zailiysky Alatau is brilliant green from snowmelt.

Mountain conditions: All hiking trails accessible. Big Almaty Lake is usually ice-free and at peak turquoise colour. Shymbulak has switched from skiing to hiking and mountain biking.

Crowds: Domestic tourism picks up in May but international crowds don’t peak until June. Accommodation prices are still reasonable.

Summer: June to August

June — Warm and Sunny

June is the beginning of Almaty’s high season. Days are warm to hot (27°C average highs), skies are mostly clear, and all mountain activities are at peak accessibility. Weekends at Shymbulak and Big Almaty Lake can be very crowded — particularly among Almaty residents making day trips.

Air quality: Better than winter/autumn but the city’s mountain geography can trap pollution on calm days. Usually clear in June.

What to do: Everything. June is the month when Almaty’s outdoor lifestyle is in full swing — hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, outdoor dining, evening walks along the foothills.

July — Hottest Month, Some Pollution

July averages 30°C in the city, occasionally climbing to 35°C+. Combined with the city’s air quality issues (vehicle emissions trapped by mountains), July can feel oppressive on still days. The mountains are the escape: at 2,000m+, temperatures are 8–10°C cooler and air is clean.

Best strategy for July: Base yourself in Almaty but spend as much time as possible at elevation. Early morning starts before the heat builds. Rest during midday.

Festivals: Almaty hosts various outdoor concerts and cultural events in summer. Check the city’s events calendar.

August — Hot, Crowded, Beautiful

August is similar to July but with slightly cooler evenings as autumn approaches. Still hot in the city (29°C average), still excellent at elevation. The Tian Shan foothills turn golden in late August — spectacular hiking conditions.

Crowds: August is the peak of Almaty’s tourist season, both domestic and international. Book accommodation well in advance. Shymbulak gondola lines can be long on weekends.

Autumn: September to November

September — The Best Month

September is widely considered Almaty’s best month. Temperatures drop to a perfect 22°C average, the skies are usually clear and blue, the mountains are golden with autumn colour (larches turn brilliant yellow from mid-September), and the summer crowds have departed.

Mountain conditions: All trails fully accessible. The road to Big Almaty Lake is open. The golden larch forests above Shymbulak are genuinely spectacular — among Central Asia’s most beautiful natural sights. This is peak photography season.

Air quality: Generally excellent in September before autumn temperature inversions begin.

Almaty’s outdoor scene: Rooftop bars and outdoor terraces are busy with locals enjoying the last of summer. The food scene is at its best with autumn produce.

October — Beautiful but Brief

Early October is still excellent — mild temperatures, golden foliage, clear skies. By mid-to-late October, temperatures drop sharply and the first mountain snows arrive. The window of ideal conditions narrows quickly.

Mountain conditions: Hiking accessible until mid-October. Snow on higher routes by late October. Shymbulak ski season begins (good skiing in November if snowfall is early).

Best for: Early October visitors get a stunning combination of autumn colour and manageable temperatures. Late October is the transition — dress warmly.

November — Autumn Ends

November marks the transition to winter. Temperatures drop below 0°C regularly, the first city snow falls, and mountain hiking season ends. Air quality begins to deteriorate as temperature inversions trap emissions. This is generally not the ideal time to visit unless you’re specifically interested in early ski season.

Winter: December to February

December to February — Ski Season

Almaty’s winter gets an unfairly negative reputation. Yes, the city can be cold (-10°C average lows, occasionally -20°C), and air pollution is at its worst in winter due to temperature inversions. But the ski scene is genuinely excellent.

Shymbulak Ski Resort is 15 minutes from the city by gondola, sits at 2,200–3,200m elevation, and offers 25 km of ski runs. Snow quality is generally good from late November through March. Season passes are inexpensive by European standards.

For non-skiers in winter: The city’s cafe and restaurant culture is at its best. Almaty’s indoor spaces — museums, concert halls, restaurants — are warm and inviting. The Ascension Cathedral in snow is beautiful.

Air quality warning: Winter air pollution in Almaty can be severe on still days when temperature inversions trap vehicle and heating emissions. People with respiratory conditions should be aware. Days are often clear but some stretches of several days can see heavy smog.

Which Neighbourhood to Stay In

Almaty’s geography matters for your visit. The city rises sharply toward the mountains in the south — staying closer to the mountains means better air and shorter access to nature, but further from some transport links.

Best areas for tourists:

  • Almaly district (city centre): Walking distance to Green Bazaar, Arbat, parks, restaurants. Best transport links.
  • Medeu area (south): Closer to the mountains, quieter, slightly better air. The Medeu ice rink is nearby; Shymbulak gondola is 10 minutes.
  • Bostandyk district (affluent south): Modern apartments, good restaurants, cleaner air. Popular with expats.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to visit Almaty?
September is widely considered Almaty's best month — perfect temperatures (22°C), clear skies, golden autumn foliage in the mountains, and fewer crowds than summer. April–May and June are also excellent. July–August is hotter and more crowded but mountains are fully accessible. Avoid winter if air quality concerns you.
Is Almaty worth visiting in winter?
Yes, if you ski or snowboard. Shymbulak ski resort is excellent — 25 km of runs, affordable season passes, and 15 minutes from the city by gondola. The city's cafe and restaurant scene is also great in winter. However, air quality can be very poor on windless winter days due to temperature inversions trapping pollution.
What is Almaty like in summer?
Hot (30°C in July–August) with excellent mountain access. The city can feel stuffy and polluted on still days, but the mountains are an immediate escape — 10°C cooler and 30 minutes away. June and early July are better than August for combining city and mountain activities.
Does it snow in Almaty?
Yes. Almaty typically gets snow from November through March, with heaviest snowfall in January and February. The city itself usually has 10–30 cm on the ground in winter. The mountains above receive much heavier snowfall — Shymbulak ski resort can have 1–2 metres of snow by February.
What is the weather like in Almaty in spring?
Spring (April–May) is one of the best times to visit. April averages 16°C, May 22°C, with long days and clear skies. The mountains come alive with colour — green foothills and snow-capped peaks. Nauryz (March 21) is Kazakhstan's most important holiday and coincides with early spring.
Is Almaty good for hiking?
Exceptionally so. Ile-Alatau National Park starts at the city's edge, and Big Almaty Lake, Shymbulak, and dozens of hiking trails are accessible within 30 minutes. The best hiking months are May through October, with September offering the most spectacular scenery (golden larches). The mountains rise to 4,000m+ above the city.
