Flights to Kazakhstan land at two main international airports: Almaty (ALA) and Astana (NQZ). Air Astana, the national carrier, operates direct routes from London, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Dubai, Seoul, and Beijing, while Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Emirates, and budget carrier FlyArystan provide additional options. Round-trip economy fares start from $120 on regional routes and $350–550 from Europe, with the cheapest months being November through March.

According to OAG aviation data, Kazakhstan has rapidly expanded its aviation network since 2020, and reaching the country is now straightforward from virtually any continent. Whether you are heading to the modern capital Astana or the cultural hub of Almaty, this guide covers every airline, route, price range, and booking strategy you need.

Main International Airports in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan has four airports that handle international flights. The two primary gateways serve most travelers, while two regional airports offer niche connections.

Almaty International Airport (ALA)

Almaty is Kazakhstan’s largest city (population 2.2 million) and its busiest aviation hub. According to the Civil Aviation Committee of Kazakhstan, the airport handles over 6 million passengers annually and has the widest selection of international routes in the country.

  • IATA code: ALA
  • Location: 15 km northeast of central Almaty
  • Terminal: Modern terminal rebuilt in 2017, expanded again in 2024
  • Best for: Travelers heading to Almaty, the Tian Shan mountains, Charyn Canyon, or southern Kazakhstan
  • Transfer to city center: Taxi 3,500–5,000 KZT ($7–10), 25–35 minutes; airport bus No. 79 runs to the city center for 150 KZT

The airport has free Wi-Fi, currency exchange desks (rates are poor; withdraw from ATMs instead), car rental counters from Hertz and Avis, and a duty-free zone. For a full breakdown of getting around after landing, see our Almaty city guide.

Astana International Airport (NQZ)

Astana, the capital since 1997, has seen its airport grow significantly. The modern terminal, opened for Expo 2017, now handles around 5 million passengers annually.

  • IATA code: NQZ
  • Location: 15 km south of central Astana
  • Terminal: Expo 2017 terminal with modern amenities
  • Best for: Travelers visiting the capital, Burabay National Park, or heading to northern Kazakhstan
  • Transfer to city center: Taxi 2,000–3,500 KZT ($4–7), 20 minutes; bus No. 10 runs to the railway station

Our Astana guide covers what to do once you arrive in the capital.

Shymkent Airport (CIT)

Kazakhstan’s third-largest city has limited international service, primarily flights from Istanbul (Turkish Airlines and Pegasus), Dubai, and several CIS destinations. Useful if your destination is southern Kazakhstan or you plan to cross into Uzbekistan overland.

Aktau Airport (SCO)

Aktau on the Caspian Sea coast receives flights from Istanbul, Tbilisi, and several Russian cities. Primarily useful for travelers heading to the Mangystau region’s otherworldly landscapes.

For a complete comparison of all airports, see our Kazakhstan airports guide.

Airlines Flying to Kazakhstan

Air Astana (KC) — Full-Service National Carrier

According to Air Astana’s annual report, the airline has been operating since 2002 and consistently ranks among the top airlines in Central Asia. According to Skytrax, it holds a four-star rating and was named “Best Airline in Central Asia and CIS” for 12 consecutive years. The fleet includes Boeing 767s, Airbus A321neos, and newer Airbus A321LRs for long-haul routes.

Key direct routes from Air Astana:

Air Astana also operates multiple daily flights on the Almaty–Astana route. Business class on long-haul routes includes lie-flat seats, competitive with European carriers at a fraction of the price.

Pro tip: Check airastana.com directly. The airline frequently runs promotional fares not listed on aggregators like Google Flights or Skyscanner.

FlyArystan (FZ) — Kazakhstan’s Budget Airline

Based on IATA data, FlyArystan launched in 2019 as Air Astana’s low-cost subsidiary and has grown to become a major player in regional aviation. The airline operates an all-Airbus A320 fleet and follows the no-frills model: low base fares, paid baggage, no meals included.

FlyArystan international routes:

  • Istanbul → Almaty / Astana / Shymkent / Aktau
  • Antalya → Almaty (seasonal, summer)
  • Kutaisi (Georgia) → Almaty
  • Bishkek → Almaty
  • Tashkent → Almaty / Shymkent

FlyArystan fares can be 40–60% cheaper than Air Astana on overlapping routes. Istanbul–Almaty one-way fares start from $80 in low season. The trade-off is tighter legroom (29-inch pitch), no free baggage beyond a 7 kg cabin bag, and less schedule flexibility.

FlyArystan also dominates domestic routes within Kazakhstan (more on that below).

Turkish Airlines (TK)

Turkish Airlines flies to both Almaty and Astana from Istanbul, with daily service on each route. Since Istanbul Airport (IST) connects to over 300 destinations worldwide, Turkish Airlines is often the best routing from North America, South America, Africa, and less-connected European cities.

  • Istanbul → Almaty: Daily, 5h
  • Istanbul → Astana: Daily, 5h 15m
  • Connection time at IST: Allow 2–4 hours minimum (the airport is enormous)

Lufthansa (LH)

Lufthansa operates Frankfurt → Astana several times per week. Combined with Lufthansa’s massive European network, this provides smooth connections from across Europe with Star Alliance benefits. Codeshare with Air Astana allows booking through to Almaty on a single ticket.

Emirates and FlyDubai

Emirates does not fly directly to Kazakhstan but provides easy connections via Dubai with partner FlyDubai, which operates:

  • Dubai → Almaty: Daily, 4h
  • Dubai → Astana: 4x/week, 4h 30m

Dubai is an excellent hub for travelers coming from Australia, India, Southeast Asia, and East Africa.

Other Airlines Serving Kazakhstan

  • Qatar Airways: Doha to Almaty (3x/week)
  • Aeroflot / S7 Airlines: Moscow to Almaty/Astana (multiple daily, from $60 one-way)
  • China Southern: Urumqi to Almaty (daily, 1h 30m, the shortest international route)
  • Korean Air: Seoul to Almaty (4x/week direct)
  • Pegasus Airlines: Istanbul Sabiha Gokçen to Almaty/Shymkent (budget alternative to Turkish Airlines)
  • Jazeera Airways: Kuwait to Almaty
  • SCAT Airlines: Kazakh carrier with routes to Tbilisi, Antalya, Batumi, and CIS cities
  • Uzbekistan Airways: Tashkent to Almaty (alternative routing from Europe or Asia via Tashkent)

Booking Window Tips

  • Air Astana long-haul (Europe): Book 6–10 weeks in advance for best fares
  • Turkish Airlines via Istanbul: Book 8–12 weeks ahead for optimal prices
  • FlyArystan budget fares: Book 4–8 weeks ahead; their lowest fares sell out fast
  • Summer peak (July–August): Book at least 3 months in advance or pay a steep premium
  • Last-minute deals: Rare on routes to Kazakhstan; this is not a market with heavy last-minute discounting

How to Find Cheap Flights to Kazakhstan

1. Fly via Istanbul or Dubai

These two hubs consistently offer the most competitive fares to Kazakhstan. Turkish Airlines and FlyArystan from Istanbul, and FlyDubai from Dubai, provide the backbone of budget routing. London–Istanbul–Almaty under £300 round trip is achievable in low season.

2. Compare Both Almaty and Astana

Sometimes Astana fares are $50–100 cheaper than Almaty from the same origin, or vice versa. If you plan to visit both cities, you can fly into the cheaper one and take a domestic flight or train between Almaty and Astana for as little as $30.

3. Book Directly with Air Astana

Air Astana regularly runs seasonal promotions (particularly in January and September) with 20–30% discounts on long-haul routes. These sales often do not appear on aggregators. Subscribe to their newsletter at airastana.com.

4. Use Google Flights Explore

Enter your departure city and select “Kazakhstan” as the destination. Google Flights will display the cheapest dates on a calendar, making it easy to spot low-fare windows.

5. Consider Open-Jaw Tickets

Fly into Almaty and out of Astana (or vice versa) to avoid backtracking. Air Astana and Turkish Airlines both allow open-jaw bookings without price penalties on most fare classes.

6. Check Nearby Departure Airports

From Europe, flying from a secondary hub to Istanbul on a budget airline (Pegasus, Wizz Air), then connecting to Almaty on FlyArystan, can save $100–200 compared to a single Air Astana ticket from a primary European airport.

7. Tashkent as an Alternative Gateway

Uzbekistan Airways and Turkish Airlines offer competitive fares to Tashkent (TAS). From there, a short flight or overnight train reaches Almaty. This routing can save $100+ on certain itineraries, and you get to see two Central Asian countries.

Domestic Flights Within Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is the ninth-largest country in the world, and flying between cities saves enormous amounts of time compared to driving or taking trains.

FlyArystan — The Domestic King

FlyArystan dominates domestic aviation with rock-bottom fares:

  • Almaty → Astana: From 8,000 KZT ($16) one-way, 1h 40m, multiple daily flights
  • Almaty → Shymkent: From 6,000 KZT ($12) one-way, 1h 20m
  • Almaty → Aktau: From 10,000 KZT ($20) one-way, 3h
  • Astana → Aktau: From 9,000 KZT ($18) one-way, 2h 30m
  • Astana → Karaganda: From 5,000 KZT ($10) one-way, 1h

These are promotional base fares; typical prices run 2–3x higher, but still remarkably affordable. FlyArystan has made internal air travel accessible to the average Kazakh citizen for the first time.

Air Astana Domestic

Air Astana operates the same domestic routes at higher prices but with included baggage, meals, and more flexible rebooking. Business class on the Almaty–Astana route includes lounge access and premium catering for around $80–120 one-way.

SCAT Airlines

SCAT is a smaller Kazakh carrier covering routes that Air Astana and FlyArystan do not prioritize, including flights to smaller cities like Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kostanay, and Atyrau.

Airport Transfers in Almaty and Astana

Almaty Airport (ALA) to City Center

Taxi: The most convenient option. Official airport taxis charge 3,500–5,000 KZT ($7–10) to central Almaty. Use the Yandex Go or inDrive app to order a ride. Both work at the airport and are cheaper than the taxi desk inside the terminal. The ride takes 25–35 minutes depending on traffic.

Bus: Bus No. 79 runs from the airport to the city center (Abai Avenue / Al-Farabi Avenue area) for 150 KZT ($0.30). It runs every 15–20 minutes from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Not ideal with heavy luggage.

Car rental: Hertz, Avis, and local agencies have counters in the arrivals hall. Expect $30–50/day for a compact car. Driving in Almaty requires confidence because traffic is dense.

Pre-booked transfer: Hotels and tour operators offer fixed-price airport pickups, typically 5,000–8,000 KZT ($10–16). Convenient if arriving late at night.

Astana Airport (NQZ) to City Center

Taxi: 2,000–3,500 KZT ($4–7) to central Astana. Yandex Go works well. The ride takes 15–20 minutes with minimal traffic. Astana’s roads are wide and rarely congested.

Bus: Bus No. 10 connects the airport to the railway station and city center for 150 KZT. Runs every 20 minutes from 6:00 AM to 10:30 PM.

Express train: A planned airport rail link has been under discussion but is not yet operational as of early 2026.

Visa Requirements Before Booking

Before you buy a ticket, confirm you can enter Kazakhstan. The good news: According to the Kazakhstan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kazakhstan has one of the most generous visa-free regimes in Central Asia.

Visa-free entry (up to 30 days):

  • United States, United Kingdom, all EU/EEA countries
  • Canada, Australia, New Zealand
  • Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia
  • UAE, Israel, Turkey
  • Brazil, Argentina, Chile

Visa-free entry (up to 14 days):

  • India, China (certain conditions apply)

E-Visa required: Citizens of most other countries can apply online at visa.mfa.kz. Processing takes 3–5 business days.

Passport validity: Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Kazakhstan (changed from 6 months in 2024).

Check our Kazakhstan visa-free countries list for full details and edge cases. Also note that Kazakhstan operates on a single time zone (UTC+5), so adjust your clock accordingly after landing.

Getting Connected on Arrival

Avoid overpriced airport SIM cards and roaming charges. An eSIM activated before departure works immediately when you land in Almaty or Astana. Kcell and Beeline networks provide reliable 4G/LTE coverage across all major cities and along main highways.
