Editorially reviewed: October 5, 2026. The source-specific check dates and verification limits are stated below; this is not a live availability or on-site inspection.

An adult Almaty Metro ride costs 120 ₸ on the operator’s published tariff checked on October 5, 2026. Visitors can buy a smart token at a station ticket office; the operator also lists metro smart cards, bank-card payment through POS terminals and Onay transport cards. Choose the payment method before approaching the gates.

The metro is useful when your accommodation and destination are close to stations. Compare the complete door-to-door route: walking to an entrance, reaching the platform, waiting, riding and walking from the exit. For city sightseeing, pair this guide with the Almaty guide and three-day Almaty itinerary.

How much are Almaty Metro tickets?

These figures come from the municipal operator’s Russian payment page, rather than a booking reseller. They are a dated tariff check, not a guarantee for a later trip.

ProductPublished amountWhat to check
Adult smart token120 ₸Published validity: one day; the operator directs holders of expired tokens to the controller
Child smart token, published as “from 7 to 15 years”60 ₸Bring proof of age; confirm whether a 15-year-old qualifies
Metro smart card180 ₸ for the cardThe published card price is separate from the 120 ₸ per-ride price
Smart-card loadingUp to 60 ridesPublished validity is three years from the last top-up

For a simple adult-token budget, two rides each for two adults cost 480 ₸ at this tariff: 2 people × 2 rides × 120 ₸. This example excludes card purchases and onward buses or taxis. Do not apply the child fare to an age group the published tariff does not identify.

Do you need an Onay card?

You do not need to start with Onay if you only want a metro trip: the operator sells its own smart token. Onay may be useful for a broader public-transport plan, but its app registration, card purchase and bus rules are separate questions.

The payment page lists bank cards through POS terminals. This establishes a payment option; it does not establish that every foreign card works or that you can tap any bank card directly at every turnstile. Ask the cashier before buying, keep a backup payment method and avoid loading more rides than you expect to use.

Keep the difference between a metro smart card and an Onay card clear. Photograph the product name and retain the receipt when you buy one. A recommendation to “get a transport card” is incomplete unless it tells you which card and where you can use it.

What time does the metro operate?

The operator publishes hours of 06:20–00:00, Astana time. Use that as the operating window, not as a promise that a train will still depart from your particular platform at midnight. Allow time to enter the station and check the direction, especially late in the evening.

Service intervals and temporary restrictions can change. Read the station display and the operator’s current site for the day of travel. If a late dinner or airport arrival falls outside a comfortable metro window, arrange another journey rather than relying on the final advertised minute.

Which stations are useful for sightseeing?

The operator’s station directory, checked October 5, 2026, lists 11 stations in this order. Use the terminus name on the platform to choose your direction; the station directory also provides individual descriptions.

For a first visit, three central stations provide useful starting points:

  • Zhibek Zholy: the operator describes the entrance at the southeast corner of Gogol and Panfilov streets and names Arbat, Panfilov Park and Ascension Cathedral among nearby sights.
  • Almaly: entrance on the east side of Panfilov, north of Karasay Batyr; the operator identifies the opera theatre and Astana Square in its surroundings.
  • Abay: entrances on both sides of Abay Avenue at Tulebayev, east of Nazarbayev; Republic Square and the Palace of the Republic are among the operator’s listed surroundings.

These are starting points, not measured walking times. Check the actual entrance and final address. Sairan Metro is not the boarding address for Sairan’s intercity buses: the Bishkek and Tashkent route listings give Tole bi Street 294, so plan that last connection separately.

How to take your first ride

  1. Find the entrance, not just the station label. A map pin can leave you on the other side of a wide road. Check the walking approach before leaving the hotel.
  2. Confirm your destination station and direction. Save the station names in the local spelling as well as English. Transliteration varies between apps.
  3. Buy or validate the right product. Tell the cashier how many adults and eligible children are travelling. Ask where that particular token or card goes at the gate.
  4. Keep bags secure while entering. Do not rush a gate while trying to follow another passenger’s payment method.
  5. Check platform signage before boarding. If uncertain, show a saved destination name to staff rather than guessing from the crowd.
  6. Check the exit on arrival. The best exit for your final address may differ from the first staircase you see.

For a late connection, include a fallback taxi budget. A cheap metro ride can still be the wrong choice when you have several heavy bags, a long walk at the far end or a tight departure.

When should you choose another mode?

SituationPlanning choice
Both addresses have convenient station accessCompare the metro route first
Several stops spread across the cityBuild the route in a map app; do not assume the metro serves each stop
Large luggage or an uncertain accessible entranceConfirm access before choosing the metro
Airport transfer or a mountain excursionPlan the actual onward connection separately
Late arrivalCheck the usable operating window and retain a taxi option

If step-free access is essential, contact the operator about the specific entrance and assistance required. A station name on a map is not evidence that every entrance meets your needs. For hotel selection around your transport plans, see where to stay in Almaty.

Rechecked October 5, 2026: Almaty Metro payment information, its operating window, station directory and the three linked central-station descriptions. This is a desk-verified visitor guide; we did not conduct a ticket purchase or test a foreign card. Recheck live service information before travelling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Almaty Metro cost?

The operator's tariff checked on October 5, 2026 lists an adult smart token at 120 tenge and a child token described as from 7 to 15 years at 60 tenge with proof of age. Confirm the upper age boundary with staff and recheck the tariff before travelling.

Can visitors use Almaty Metro without an Onay card?

Yes. The metro operator lists its own smart token sold through station ticket offices. Onay is another listed payment option, not the only one.

Can I pay with a foreign bank card?

The operator lists bank-card payment through POS terminals, but that does not guarantee acceptance of every foreign card or direct bank-card tapping at every gate. Confirm at the cashier and keep a backup.

Does Almaty Metro run all night?

No. The operator publishes hours of 06:20–00:00. Check the station's service information and allow time before the end of that window.
